Chesterfield Match
Defeat against Chesterfield at the end of the season
Leake lost their final league game of the season but the score line did them no justice at all. They could and should have scored at least three more tries but the fates were against them.Leake kick off into the strong wind and soon gave away a penalty for not releasing the ball giving Chesterfield an easy 3 points.Leake restarted and a fine catch from the restart by Wilson gave Leake a good platform for an attack but they lost possession allowing the home team to ship the ball out to their speedy winger who ghosted through to score under the posts.Strong running by Malkin kept Leake on the offensive but as they tried to move the ball out wide Chester field managed to recover the ball and they fed the ball out to the wing who managed to score again under the posts making it 17-0.The unlucky Wilson took a knock and had to be replaced by Langham who was soon into the game as he broke out of defence Good inter passing saw him get the ball back on the half way line and break into Chesterfield’s 22 before he was hauled down. This gave Leake confidence and they continued to attack and when Chester field were penalised for going over the top Leake took the penalty quickly and Malkin brushed off several attempted tackles to score a fine try. Leake then gave away two tries just before half time as they allowed Chesterfield to score against the run of play and make it 29-5 at the break.
Leake started the second half well and it looked as though they were going to score an early try but the pass by Astbury was adjudged forward. Strong running by Jackson, Astbury and Weston kept Leake on the offensive and when Weston was tackled off the ball Hogg took it quickly and floated a superb pass to Astbury who scored in the corner.A strong run by Hind who made ground before passing to Malkin who was hauled down metres short of the line. Chesterfield managed to clear the ball but they were penalised for not releasing the ball Kirton kicked the penalty into the corner. Thurman took a clean catch at the line out and he was driven over the line but the referee decided the ball was not grounded and Chesterfield were off the hook.Jackson was yellow carded for a high tackle which allowed Chesterfield to use their big forwards to score another try. Back came Leake and they should have scored another try but Hoggs pass was knocked on by The Yorkshire Ripper with the try line wide open. Despite Leake’s efforts they could not break through and score again to make the score line a better reflection of the game. A disappointing end to a season that could have been much better had Leake been able to put a consistent team out on a regular basis instead off making changes every week.
